[Formed] like ἴκτερος ["jaundice"]. One who has a passion involving horses. Aristophanes in Clouds [writes]: "but he poured a horse-fever over my money." He played on ἴκτερος ["jaundice"], which is diffused over the faces of the sufferers. Thus [he is saying that] a horse-fever has been cast upon the money.

Ἵππεροι: ὡς ἴκτερος. ὁ περὶ τοὺς ἵππους τὸν ἔρωτα ἔχων. Ἀριστοφάνης Νεφέλαις: ἀλλ' ἵππερόν μου κατέχεε τῶν χρημάτων. ἔπαιξε παρὰ τὸν ἴκτερον, ὃς περιχεῖται ταῖς ὄψεσι τῶν νοσούντων. οὕτως ἐπιβεβλῆσθαι τοῖς χρήμασιν ἀντὶ ἵππερον.
