Translation: After this man had founded the [church of the] Holy Wisdom, he purified and decorated with marble the hall which was formerly the Augusteion, which is interpreted 'fishmarket';[1] and he set up an equestrian statue of himself. With his left hand he carries a sphere with a cross fixed on it, signifying that through faith in the cross he has gained dominion over the world. The sphere [represents] the earth because of its spherical shape; faith [is represented by] the cross because of God who was nailed to it in the flesh. He holds his right hand stretched out towards the east, warning the Persians to stop and not cross over into the Roman land. By extending and thrusting out his hands he proclaims, 'stop and go no further; for it will avail you nothing.'[2]
