Headword: Ἠγμένος
Adler number: eta,65
Translated headword: brought, led, taken; brought up
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] trapped, and obeying in everything.[1]
"He felt such admiration for the youth that, since he also had a daughter, she too brought up in philosophy, he pledged her to him".[2]
Greek Original:
Ἠγμένος: τεθηρευμένος, καὶ πάντα πειθαρχῶν. ὁ δὲ ἠγάσθη τὸ μειράκιον ὥστε καὶ θυγάτριον ἔχων, ἠγμένον καὶ αὐτὸ φιλοσόφως, αὐτῷ κατεγγυῆσαι.
Notes:
The headword is the perfect participle passive, masculine nominative singular, of the verb ἄγω ; cf. eta 66.
[1] Both the headword and these glosses are taken from Photius, Lexicon eta34 Theodoridis, though that has dative παντί instead of the Suda's πάντα . The origin is perhaps Hesychius eta76, glossing ἠγμένος as τεθηρευμένος, πειθήνιος ; 'trapped, obedient'. (The original source is perhaps Demosthenes 18.9, envisaging a dikast ἠγμένος by extraneous arguments.)
[2] Part of a longer passage (see under omicron 216) explaining the relation between the Aristotelian teacher Olympiodorus and Proclus, his brilliant pupil; it is taken from the Life of Proclus by Marinus.
