Headword: Ἡλιοστερὴς κυνῆ
Adler number: eta,240
Translated headword: sun-depriving helmet
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A shade-creating, wide-felted helmet, covering [sc. the head] and taking away [sc. exposure to] the sun. [It is] "Thessalian", because the Thessalian felts [or: caps] were exceptional.
Greek Original:
Ἡλιοστερὴς κυνῆ: σκιαστική, πλατύπιλος κυνῆ, καλύπτουσα καὶ ἀφαιρουμένη τὴν ἡλίωσιν. Θεσσαλὶς δέ, διότι περισσοὶ ἦσαν οἱ Θεσσαλικοὶ πῖλοι.
Notes:
From a scholion on this phrase (and the gloss "Thessalian") in Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus 313-14. Most modern editions accept the adjective "sun-depriving", though emendations have been suggested: ἡλιοστεγής (Coraes) and ἡλιοσκεπής (Nauck).
