Adler number: eta,225
Translated headword: manhood of the city
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Meaning [those] of an age [sc. to fight], the young men. So Lysias[1] and Demosthenes in [the] Philippics [sc. use the phrase].[2]
Greek Original:
Ἡλικία τῆς πόλεως: ἀντὶ τοῦ ἐν ἡλικίᾳ, οἱ νέοι. οὕτω Λυσίας καὶ Δημοσθένης ἐν Φιλιππικοῖς.
Notes:
[1] Harpokration s.v. -- from which the present entry derives -- had cited 'Lycurgus' (fr. II.3 Conomis), but 'Lysias' here (and in the epitome of Harpok.) must be accounted a deliberate variant, not a slip: see Lysias 2.49 ('manhood' only: web address 1).
[2] Adler cites Demosthenes 1.28; see also Demosthenes 4.7 (web address 2).
