Translated headword: fleecy, cushy
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Referring to a] well-aired city; or a soft one, wooly "just as a sisyra".[1] Plato in Hyperbolos -- he is speaking about sheep -- [writes]: "and he has taken advantage of so much of the fleeciness, with the result that it is very miserable."[2] Cratinus [in][3] Pylaia [writes]: "fleecy tongue of men."[4]
Greek Original:
*eu)/eron: eu)a/eron po/lin: h)\ malakh/n, w(/sper sisu/ran eu)e/rion. *pla/twn *(uperbo/lw|: le/gei de\ peri\ tw=n proba/twn. kai\ tosou=ton th=s eu)eri/as a)pole/lauken w(/ste a)qliwta/th e)sti/. *krati=nos *pulaia/n: glw=ssan eu)e/ran brotw=n.
Notes:
The headword is accusative singular, as are the initial glosses, reflecting the headword's source, Aristophanes, Birds 121, where the phrases "cushy city" and (in 122) "just like a sisyra" occur in the accusative. See web address 1 below for the text, and note the scholia to the line.
[1] A "sisyra" is a rather cheap cloak, usually made of goat skin. See also sigma 486, sigma 487, sigma 488. Here the lexicographer uses a look-alike synonym of the headword eu)e/rion ('wooly'), which strict Atticists like Phrynichus (116) condemn as a barbarism.
[2] Plato Comicus fr. 169 Kock, now 184 K.-A. (For Hyperbolus see under upsilon 245.)
[3] The transmitted accusative here clearly should be dative (Pearson); cf. alpha 1676, tau 778.
[4] Cratinus fr. 175 Kock, now 181 K.-A.
