Headword: Ἔθνος
Adler number: epsilon,327
Translated headword: nation, people, tribe
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] the majority/mass.[1]
"[...] they were considered seducers, rent-boys, burglars, cut-purses and tribes of that sort".[2]
[The word] ethnos [can mean] not only a large and populous people but also, in a special sense, a particular part of the polis. Thus Demosthenes in the [speech] Against Aristocrates and in the ninth Philippic.[3]
Josephus in his History of the Maccabees says ἐθνοπάγκτου ["nation-packed"].[4]
[1] cf. the scholia to Homer, Iliad 3.32.
[2] Philostratus, Life of Apollonius 4.22; more fully at beta 68.
[3] From Harpokration s.v., citing Demosthenes 23.146 and 9.26.
[4] Addendum lacking, Adler reports, in mss TFV, and placed differently in others. The word ἐθοπάγκτου [ἐθνοπάκτου in ms M] is attested only here -- so it is either, and most probably, an error or else from a work of Josephus (iota 503, iota 504) on, in whole or part, the Maccabees which has not survived. (For the Maccabees see generally under alpha 2693, to which mu 49 merely cross-refers.)
