[1] Polybius fr. 141 Büttner-Wobst. Büttner-Wobst notes (532) that Casaubon attributed this fragment to Polybius. Schweighäuser suspected (ibid.) that the context of the fragment is the 180 BCE embassy of Kallikrates of Leontion to the Roman Senate. Although Polybius (24.10-12, web address 1) and many later historians (cf. Derow, 169) view the Achaean ambassador's advice that Rome intervene in Greek politics directly on behalf of pro-Roman currents as both disastrous and treacherous, some adopt a more nuanced analysis of Kallikrates' diplomacy (Derow, 176-177).
