Headword: *)eceboh/qh
Adler number: epsilon,1587
Translated headword: was noised abroad
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] was talked about, but e)ceboh/qei ["he/she/it was coming to help"] [means he/she/it] helped.[1]
Greek Original:
*)eceboh/qh: to\ e)lalh/qh, *)eceboh/qei de\ to\ e)boh/qhsen.
Notes:
The primary headword must be quoted from somewhere; the small handful of extant attestations include Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 1.163 (of a woman's beauty). Perhaps, therefore, the supplementary lemma also comes from that author: Jewish War 2.236. See further, next note
[1] In late Greek, the headword e)ceboh/qh would have been homophonous with e)ceboh/qei. While the headword is the third person singular aorist passive indicative of e)kboa/w ('noise abroad' or, more literally 'shout out'), e)ceboh/qei is third singular imperfect active indicative of e)kbohqe/w ('come to help'). This imperfect verb is glossed here with the corresponding aorist form of the same verb.
