Headword: Ἐξεβοήθη
Adler number: epsilon,1587
Translated headword: was noised abroad
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] was talked about, but ἐξεβοήθει ["he/she/it was coming to help"] [means he/she/it] helped.[1]
Greek Original:
Ἐξεβοήθη: τὸ ἐλαλήθη, Ἐξεβοήθει δὲ τὸ ἐβοήθησεν.
Notes:
The primary headword must be quoted from somewhere; the small handful of extant attestations include Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 1.163 (of a woman's beauty). Perhaps, therefore, the supplementary lemma also comes from that author: Jewish War 2.236. See further, next note
[1] In late Greek, the headword ἐξεβοήθη would have been homophonous with ἐξεβοήθει . While the headword is the third person singular aorist passive indicative of ἐκβοάω ('noise abroad' or, more literally 'shout out'), ἐξεβοήθει is third singular imperfect active indicative of ἐκβοηθέω ('come to help'). This imperfect verb is glossed here with the corresponding aorist form of the same verb.
