Headword: Ἐνήθλει
Adler number: epsilon,1305
Translated headword: was contending with
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] was holding out against.[1] "And in addition to these things he was contending with poverty [...]".[2]
Greek Original:
Ἐνήθλει: ἐνεκαρτέρει. καὶ ὁ μὲν ἐπὶ τούτοις τῇ πενίᾳ ἐνήθλει.
Notes:
[1] This headword (imperfect of ἐναθλέω ) and gloss appear together in Aelian, Varia Historia 2.4 (on Chariton being tortured by Phalaris: see under alpha 2634).
[2] Regarded by Adler as Aelian fr. 318 Hercher (315c Domingo-Forasté, cf. pi 966), but only the final three words here are part of that phrase; apparently, therefore, quoted from somewhere else.
Keywords: biography; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; economics; imagery
