Translated headword: having staged a drama, having fabricated
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he] having put together.
Greek Original:
*dramatourgh/sas: sunei/s.
Notes:
The headword, aorist active participle, masculine singular nominative, of the verb dramatourge/w is treated in a recognizably related fashion in Synagoge delta359 and Photius, Lexicon delta744. However, as glosses both lexica have participles from the verb sunti/qhmi ('put together, compose') rather than the participle of suni/hmi that we find here. Theodoridis' text of Photius, on the evidence of the reading of the newly recovered Zavordensis ms, restores sunqei/s ('having composed'), which surely ought to have been (if it wasn't actually) what the Suda compiler wrote as well (as suggested already by Portus in his 1630 edition of the Suda). The Suda's gloss, sunei/s, has a range of meanings that could conceivably encompass 'putting together' in the sense of 'composing', and this possibility is reflected in the translation given, but it would hardly be a normal use of this word.
The headword itself must be quoted from somewhere; extant possibilities occur in the Christian writers Epiphanius and Philostorgius, where it is frequently used to describe the misguided imaginings of theological adversaries. It can also be applied as a theatrical metaphor for "staging" or manipulating political situations (e.g. Anna Comnena, Alexias 1.12.9.7, although in a different form), or to wicked machinations in general, hence Hesychius' glossing (delta2312) of the infinitive of the verb as panourgei=n ('to be unscrupulous') -- though contrast the more neutral treatment Hesychius gives to a different form of the verb at epsilon509.
