Headword: Χαμαιπέτεια
Adler number: chi,71
Translated headword: being thrown to the ground
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Also [sc. attested is the related adjective] χαμαιπετής , [meaning] one who has been thrown to the ground.[1]
Greek Original:
Χαμαιπέτεια. καὶ Χαμαιπετής, χαμαὶ ἐρριμμένος.
Notes:
The unglossed headword is an abstract noun expressing quality: "thrown-to-the-ground-ness". Its only other attestation is in Iamblichus, Protrepticus 116.10 (accusative case there), which has perhaps generated this Suda entry.
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica. If χαμαιπετής is quoted from somewhere, extant possibilities begin with Plato, Symposium 203D.
Keywords: athletics; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; imagery; philosophy
