Headword: *barei=a xei/r
Adler number: beta,113
Translated headword: weighty hand; weighty band
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a powerful [one]. "A sufficient number gathered, both a weighty band and unexpected."[1]
Greek Original:
*barei=a xei/r: h( dunath/. sune/sth de\ plh=qos i(kano\n, kai\ barei=a xei\r kai\ para/docos.
Notes:
A problematic entry. Photius, Lexicon beta68, has the headword in (seemingly) the 'weighty hand' sense, adding that Hipponax fr. 138a uses this phrase for the right (sc. hand). Previously, Hesychius beta226 had glossed the headword phrase as 'the murderous (sc. hand)'. Here in the Suda the gloss would fit a 'hand' sense, but the quotation appended -- from which the headword phrase may or may not be extracted -- seems to require an understanding of xei/r as 'band' of troops; cf. LSJ s.v., V.
