Headword: Ἀνοίγει
Adler number: alpha,2772
Translated headword: opens
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Opens] and ἀνοιγνύει ["opens up"]: [sc. used] in two ways.[1]
For ἀνοίγω [means] "I separate".
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] ἀνοιγομένοις τοῖς κτήνεσιν ["when the cattle are being opened"], meaning cleaved apart. Herodotus [sc. uses the phrase].[2]
"With the tombs being opened under a witness sun and the bones being shamefully carried out into private tombs."[3]
[Used] with a dative; and with an accusative, as in: "open your mouth with the word of god."[4]
Notes:
[1] Same glossing in Photius and elsewhere. (What the 'two ways' are is not made clear, but ἀνοιγνύει is otherwise unattested.)
[2] Herodotus 4.58, in Ionic dialect (web address 1 below).
[3] Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta Constantini Porphyrogeniti) unidentifiable (Adler suggests Aelian.)
[4] Not identified by Adler, but identifiable via the TLG as coming from the Septuagint: Proverbs 31.8.
