Headword: Ἀνιστάμεναι
Adler number: alpha,2480
Translated headword: being depopulated
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they who are] being taken prisoner.
Greek Original:
Ἀνιστάμεναι: αἰχμαλωτιζόμεναι.
Note:
Same entry in Photius and elsewhere. The headword is feminine nominative plural of this middle/passive participle (as too, necessarily, is the gloss), so the governing noun is likely to be "cities", "territories", etc. Theodoridis on Photius s.v. notes similar glossing in the scholia to Gregory of Nazianus, Orations 22.2, where the phrase πατρίδες ἀνιστάμεναι occurs, and he reasonably suggests that passage as the source.
Keywords: Christianity; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography; history; imagery; military affairs; religion; rhetoric
