Headword: *)anema/cato
Adler number: alpha,2199
Translated headword: wiped off
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"Everything he did he wiped off and paid the price for with his own head." Thus Aelian [writes] in Concerning Divine Manifestations.[1]
Greek Original:
*)anema/cato: pa/nta o(/sa e)/drasen a)nema/cato kai\ e)/tise th=| e(autou= kefalh=|. ou(/tws *ai)liano\s e)n tw=| *peri\ qei/wn e)nargei/wn.
Notes:
The headword -- aorist middle, third person singular, of a)nama/ssw -- is presumably extracted from the quotation given.
The LSJ entry on this verb (web address 1) notes, in relation to its earliest appearances (in Homer and Herodotus), the idea that murder left a stain of pollution which could be erased by wiping off the sword on the head of the slain victim. Later instances, probably including the present one, are figurative rather than literal.
[1] Aelian fr. 21 Domingo-Forasté (21 Hercher); again at alpha 2253.
