[1] Likewise in ps.-Zonaras. On the headword verb gefuri/zw (of which this is the present participle, masculine nominative singular) see LSJ s.v. and further, next note.
[2] The headword verb literally means 'bridging', and by extension 'shouting from the bridge', i.e. the causeway along which processions from Athens to the Eleusinian Mysteries crossed the river Kephisos and had to endure (?)apotropaic insults from hooded figures gathered there. (On these gephyrismoi see generally Mylonas 256.) Outside lexicography its two occurrences are in Plutarch's Sulla, 6.12 and 13.1 (on the Athenians' mockery of Sulla and his wife Caecilia Metella). The second of these has general parallels with the passage attributed here to 'Polybius', a writer who had died thirty years before Sulla's siege of Athens. Adler, following de Boor, suggests Cassius Dio or John of Antioch; not accepted by Roberto as a fr. of John.
