Adler number: alphaiota,230
Translated headword: tale, story
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning a] proverbial story. Or [intended as] praise, and encomium. There is a certain tale: how a man and not a man[1] killed me, a bird and not a bird, but just the same a bird, while sitting on a branch and not a branch, with a stone and not a stone. [The answers are] eunuch, bat,[2] reed, pumice.[3]
An ai)=nos differs from a mu=qos in that the former is directed not at children but at adults, and not only for persuasion, but also [meant] to have a certain exhortation. For [ai)=nos] means in a cryptic way to instruct and teach something, just as Hesiod seems to have done in his poetry.[4]
A dread individual is [called] ai)no/s with an acute accent.
Also [sc. attested is] ai)=nos,[5] [meaning] praise, hymn, glory.
