Headword: Adoratia
Adler number: alpha,506
Translated headword: non-deployment
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] exemption from military service.[1] But strictly speaking [it means] rest.
Greek Original:
Adoratia: hê astrateia. kuriôs de hê argia.
Notes:
The headword, attested only here and in ps.-Zonaras (though Adler cites a comparable entry in the Ambrosian Lexicon), literally means "spearlessness", from do/ru, "spear": see delta 1394, and cf. delta 1378 for the diminutive dora/tion. Some cognates, like the verb dorati/zomai and the noun doratismo/s, retain the literal connection with spears; this one is looser.
[1] cf. alpha 4254.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; military affairs
