[Meaning] the dough with which cooks wipe things up -- they used to call it a handwiper -- which they would toss to the dogs when they were done with work. Or, food for dogs consisting of dough and fat. As the poet says: "for he always brings things to sweeten the spirit."[1] For after dinner they used to smear some grease on a piece of dough and throw it to the dogs. And elsewhere Aristophanes [writes]: "but I think I will outdo you in these matters; or vainly did I grow so large feeding on sops."[2]
