Headword: Apaideutoi
Adler number: alpha,2954
Translated headword: uneducated, untrained
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] ignorant.
Disorderly.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] "more uneducated than Philonides of Melite". This Philonides was not only big, but also unlearned and swinish. Aristophanes mocks him as a man who had hangers-on and one who spent his time in Corinth, through the love of Lais. He was mocked also as gluttonous along with his companions, whom he called boars; and Lais [they called] Circe, since she used to drug her lovers.[2]
Greek Original:

Notes:
[1] The headword, which has the first of these glosses in other lexica also, is masculine/feminine nominative plural of a)pai/deutos and must be quoted from somewhere; there are numerous possibilities.
[2] From the scholia to Aristophanes, Wealth [Plutus] 303 (web address 1), cf. 179. (The phrase quoted is actually from another comic poet, Nicochares: fr. 3 Kock, now 4 K.-A.) On Philonides of (the Athenian deme) Melite, see generally J.K. Davies, Athenian Propertied Families 600-300 BC (Oxford 1971) 422. For Lais (or Nais?) see lambda 40, nu 16, and chi 190. For Circe see kappa 1662.
