Headword: Anthinê
Adler number: alpha,2513
Translated headword: Anthene, Anthine
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A city;[1] also the (?)shoulder-wrap [sc. of a cloak or tunic].[2]
Also [sc. attested is the adjective] anthinon ["flowery"], [meaning something] blossomy, bright.[3]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] 'flowery chiton', and (?)nourishment.[4]
Greek Original:
Anthinê: polis: kai hê epômis. kai Anthinon, anthêron, bapton. kai Anthinos chitôn, kai hê trophê.
Notes:
[1] In NE Lakonia, Greece. 'Anthine' here; more authentically Anthene in the immediate source, Harpokration s.v., commenting on Lysias fr. 31 Sauppe (now 36 Carey OCT).
[2] For the various senses of e)pwmi/s (all stemming from its basic meaning 'shoulder') see LSJ s.v., and under epsilon 2838. Which one is intended in the present entry is not self-evident, but a (?)'flowered' garment (or component thereof) seems more plausible than part of the anatomy.
[3] cf. already alpha 2503.
[4] The phrase (also in the Ambrosian Lexicon, according to Adler) is presumably quoted from somewhere. (For "flowery" clothes see LSJ s.v. a)/nqinos.) The appended words kai\ h( trofh/ are unintelligible, and perhaps textually corrupt.
