Headword: Anapeistêrian
Adler number: alpha,2010
Translated headword: persuasive
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] able to persuade the listeners.[1] Aristophanes [writes]: "how on earth could this [youth] learn acquittal from a lawsuit, or a summons, or persuasive hot air? Yet Hyperbolos learned this for a talent."[2] Summons: that is, [summoning] testimony. Hot air: acquittal from the lawsuits; a sort of trick, [the use] of empty words to persuade the listeners. Or "persuasive", so as to produce hot air and win over the opponents. Akin to persuasively winning the suit. Hyperbolos was satirized as uneducated and late in learning.[3] The teachers are worthy of belief when they say: "I do not accept less than this for this lecture." And they promise to give thought to the new studies, as many as they think of.
