Headword: Amathesteros
Adler number: alpha,1467
Translated headword: more ignorant, rather ignorant
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Also [sc. attested] is a)maqh/s; meaning uneducated and unprepared; Plato [sc. uses the word].[1] It is also applied to one who is poorly educated and to someone not educated who understands by instinct.
Greek Original:
Amathesteros. kai Amathês: anti tou apaideutos kai akosmêtos: Platôn. tassetai de kai epi tou dusmathous kai epi tou mê mathontos, phusei de epistamenou.
Notes:
The unglossed headword is the comparative (masculine nominative singular) of the adjective featured in the body of the entry (which is also in Photius); cf. already alpha 1466 and again alpha 1469.
In Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon both a)maqe/steros and a)maqh/s share this glossing, which suggests that a)maqe/steros also (cf. below) comes from Plato; if so, from Republic 409D.
