Headword: *pastoforei=on
Adler number: pi,762
Translated headword: shrine-store, priest's chamber
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] that which stores the shrine.
Greek Original:
*pastoforei=on: to\ fe/ron to\n pasto/n.
= Synagoge, Photius pi474 Theodoridis; and cf Hesychius pi1087.
The uncomprehending-looking gloss simply expands the etymology implicit in the headword, a neuter noun which can be spelled either -phoreion, as here, or more usually -phorion. Its most commonly-attested application is to the priest's chamber in the temple at Jerusalem: see LSJ s.v.
Adler asserts that these entries stem from Jeremiah 42.4 LXX, where the phrase ei)s to\ pastofo/rion occurs. However, that phrase also occurs in Isaiah 22:15 LXX, commentary to which may have generated them; note that Procopius' commentary ad loc. has the -phoreion spelling (providing the only other attestation of the headword as such outside lexica).
