Headword: *parallh/lwn
Adler number: pi,381
Translated headword: parallel
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] similar, consequent, near to each other, equally.[1]
"And digging parallel to the wall that seemed to be about to fall [...] they engaged with the enemy underground."[2] Meaning equally.
Greek Original:
*parallh/lwn: o(moi/wn, a)kolou/qwn, e)ggu\s a)llh/lwn, e)ci/sou. kai\ para/llhlon o)ru/cantes tw=| dokou=nti pesei=sqai tei/xei sunh=yan u(po\ gh=n toi=s e)nanti/ois. a)nti\ tou= e)ci/sou.
[1] As transmitted, the headword and the first three glosses are genitive plural adjectives (the last gloss, eci/sou, is an adverb); this would mean that the headword is not drawn from the quotation given, since there we find the adjective in the singular as an internal or adverbial accusative. (Hence the last of the glosses would be most appropriate to the quotation.) Note, however, that in earlier lexica (references at Photius pi269 Theodoridis) these forms are singulars. This does not prove that the headword is drawn from the quotation -- which the other lexica do not have -- but does at least make it possible.
[2] Quotation not identified by Adler but identifiable via the TLG as an abridgement of Diodorus Siculus 20.94.2 (on the countermeasures taken by the Rhodians in 304 BCE against the siege tactics of Demetrius Poliorcetes). See on this Theodoridis' Photius edition, vol.II p.LXXVII.
