Headword: *promhqei=sqai
Adler number: pi,2509
Translated headword: to take care, to use forethought
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] to debate, to foresee.[1]
Greek Original:
*promhqei=sqai: probouleu/esqai, pronoei=sqai.
The headword is the present middle/passive infinitive of the verb promhqe/omai, I am mindful, take care of beforehand; cf. pi 2505, pi 2507, and see generally LSJ s.v. The entry is probably transposed, in the immediate sense, from prior lexicography, but see further, next note.
[1] The first gloss is the same form as the headword, but from the verb probouleu/w, I deliberate beforehand, contrive; cf. pi 2349 and see generally LSJ s.v. [In her critical apparatus Adler reports that mss AF transmit probouleu/sasqai, the aorist middle infinitive: to have contrived beforehand.] The second gloss is again the same form as the headword, but from the contract verb pronoe/w, I foresee, perceive beforehand; see generally LSJ s.v. The headword is identically glossed in the Synagoge, Photius' Lexicon (pi1261 Theodoridis), and Lexica Segueriana 349.21; cf. Anecdota Graeca (Cramer) 2.483.5, Lexicon in orationes Gregorii Nazianzeni at pi183.19, and Erotian 109.11 (Klein). Theodoridis on Photius suggests that the headword might be quoted from tragedy: a variant reading for proqumei=sqai at (?)Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound 381, is promhqei=sqai, which the scholia there gloss with pronoei=sqai.
