Translated headword: puns
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] games from words;[1] also [sc. attested is the related adjective] philepsios,[2] [meaning] one who is playful;[3] but with a smooth breathing philepsios is someone fond of speaking.[4]
Greek Original:
*(/eyia: ta\ a)po\ lo/gwn pai/gnia: kai\ file/yios, o( filopai/gmwn: yilou/menon de\ filolo/gos e)sti\n o( file/yios.
Same or similar material in other lexica, and cf. also the scholia to Apollonius Rhodius, Argonautica 1.459, where the related verb occurs.
[1] The primary headword (which must be quoted from somewhere) is plural of a neuter noun connected with epsilon 4063 (q.v.).
[2] For file/yios, see also Hesychius s.v. It is also found as a personal name in classical Athens: see Aristophanes, Plutus [Wealth] 177 and Demosthenes 24.134, the latter generating phi 316. Note also the proverb *file/yios o(/de (to\n tro/pon) in Gregorius 3.29 and Apostolius 17.86.
[3] phi 400.
[4] cf. generally Hesychius s.v. filolo/gos (two entries). The Suda's 'with a smooth breathing' obviously cannot refer to the beginning of the word and must instead pertain to the aspiration of the epsi- element; but even so it is odd (cf. alpha 3112).
