Adler number: epsilon,3065
Translated headword: love-maddened
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] one who is being driven mad [sc. when] in love.
Greek Original:
*)erwmanh/s: o( e)n tw=| e)/rwti maino/menos.
Same entry, according to Adler, in the Ambrosian Lexicon. In ps.-Zonaras this same glossing phrase is attached to two adverbs, e)rwmanw=s and e)rwtomanw=s, neither of them otherwise attested.
Here in the Suda the headword is an adjective -- as indeed is a better fit with the gloss -- but a rare one. For an apparent instance in prose see Diodorus Siculus 30.22.1 (with the standard emendation by Valesius from e)rwme/nhn to e)rwmanh=), on L. Aemilius Paullus' passionate feelings for his son, Scipio Africanus the Younger. Otherwise e)rwmanh/s is characteristic of late poetry: Oppian and, especially, Nonnus.
