Headword: Ζάμολξις
Adler number: zeta,18
Translated headword: Zamolxis
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Feminine. Name of a goddess.
Greek Original:
Ζάμολξις: θηλυκῶς. ὄνομα θεᾶς.
Note:
Herodotus (4.94-96: web address 1) and Strabo (7.3.5: web address 2) report that Zamolxis (or Samolxis) was the chief god (masculine) of the Getae. See generally zeta 17, pi 3120. The assertion in the present entry is unmatched elsewhere, and may represent a misunderstanding of passages where the role of Z. is likened to that of Hestia (e.g. Posidonius in Diodorus Siculus 1.94.2).
