Note:
[1] Greek Anthology 6.260.1-2 (Geminus), abridged. In line 2 te/knwn ('children') is a corruption of le/ktrwn ('bed'). Phryne was a well-known courtesan; cf. phi 760. For Thespiai cf. theta 276, theta 277, theta 279. On this epigram, an inscription for Praxiteles's statue of Eros, given by him to Phryne, and dedicated by her at Thespiae in Boeotia, see Gow and Page vol. I (264-265) and vol. II (298-299). The suggestion that te/knwn displaced le/ktrwn is due to Johann C. von Orelli (born in Zürich, of Italian-Swiss heritage, 1787-1849); cf. Gow and Page vol. II (298). Gow and Page, however, prefer (ibid.) the emendation given by Otto Jahn (German archaelogist and philologist, 1813-1869): texnw=n ('skills', 'arts'), e.g. "in payment for her arts"; cf. Gow and Page vol. I (265).
