Headword: *tu/ga
Adler number: tau,1144
Translated headword: toga
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Senatorial dress among Romans.
Greek Original:
*tu/ga: para\ *(rwmai/ois sugklhtikh\ e)sqh/s.
Notes:
More exactly 'the principal garment of the free-born Roman male' (OCD(4) s.v.).
The odd form tu/ga is unique to this passage (and, according to Adler, in the unpublished Lexicon codicis Barocciani 50); for transliteration with o see e.g. Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Roman Antiquities 3.61.1; and note anyway an alternative Greek term for the toga (tau 464, tau 465).
Keywords: clothing; constitution; definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; geography
