Adler number: sigma,958
Translated headword: libation
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning a] pouring of wine in honor of divinities; or for friendship.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] σπονδῖτις ['libational']. In the Epigrams: "and a libational drop always accompanying sacrifices."[2]
Greek Original:
Σπονδή: οἴνου ἔκχυσις ἐπὶ τιμῇ δαιμόνων: ἢ φιλίᾳ. καὶ Σπονδῖτις. ἐν Ἐπιγράμμασι: καὶ σταγόνα σπονδῖτιν ἀεὶ θυέεσσιν ὀπηδόν.
Notes:
[1] = Synagoge sigma182, Photius sigma471 Theodoridis, and similarly elsewhere. Suda ms A, Adler reports, joins Photius in making the final word φιλίᾳ dative (the reading adopted by Adler). The Synagoge and other Suda mss make φιλία nominative, offering 'friendship', rather than 'a pouring... for friendship' as a gloss. The headword in the plural σπονδαί is often used metonymically in the sense of 'treaty' or 'alliance'. The nominative singular headword may be a generic lexical reference or extracted from some literary source.
[2] Greek Anthology 6.190.7 (Gaetulicus), also quoted with more context at kappa 2665. The nominative lemma, an adjective derived from the primary headword, occurs in the accusative in the quotation. It is not attested elsewhere.
