Headword: *si/mwn
Adler number: sigma,447
Translated headword: Simon
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Genitive] *si/mwnos. A proper name.[1]
Also a proverb: "more rapacious than Simon". Aristophanes [says that] when they see Simon they suddenly become wolves. He was a sophist, who appropriated public property.[2] Simon and Theoros and Kleonymos, these men [are] perjurers. Aristophanes [writes]: "if the thunderbolt strikes perjurers, how did it not blast Simon or Kleonymos or Theoros? They are quintessential perjurers".[3]

Notes:
[1] Apart from the specification of the genitive, added here, this reproduces exactly Harpokration (and Photius) s.v. What prompted Harpok. to have such an entry is therefore unclear. Perhaps the named litigant in Lysias 3, but there are several other possibilities.
