Son of Lykos;[1] from Megalopolis in Arkadia. A teacher of Scipio Africanus, at the same time as Panaitios the philosopher.[2] He lived in the era of Ptolemy surnamed Euergetes.[3] This man wrote the long Roman History in 40 books. He/it began from the flight of Kleomenes of Sparta [sc. to Egypt] and the succession, to the Macedonian throne, of Philip the son of Perseus,[4] attaching in order the events of Roman history.
NB:[5] Poseidonios of Olbiopolis, a sophist, took up the History of Polybios. Also Strabo of Amaseia wrote Events after Polybius, in 43 books.

Notes:
c.200-118. See generally OCD4 Polybius(1). With the present entry cf. Stephanus of Byzantium, s.v. Megale polis.
[1] Lykortas, rather: see Polybius 22.3.6, and copiously elsewhere.
[2] See already pi 184. (This is Scipio Africanus the Younger = Scipio Aemilianus.)
[3] Too early, even if we construe "he was born" rather than "he lived".
[4] Philip V (who was the father, not the son, of Perseus).
[5] This additional material, Adler reports, is added in the margin of ms A.
[6] cf. pi 2108, and generally OCD4 Posidonius(1).
[7] cf. sigma 1155.
