Translated headword: ragged ends, shoes (?)
Vetting Status: high
An agricultural kind [of thing].[1] "And the plowman Parmis dedicated [his] worn-out shoes to Deo [= Demeter], having ceased from wearisome toils."[2]
Greek Original:
*podew=nas: ei)=dos gewrgiko/n. kai\ trhtou\s podew=nas o( gato/mos a)/nqeto *dhoi= *pa/rmis, a)nihrw=n pausa/menos kama/twn.
The headword (in the accusative plural, extracted from the quotation given) means the ragged ends of an animal skin where the feet were. For various applications, see LSJ s.v.
[1] Kuster conjectured ei)=dos u(podh/matos gewrgikou= "a kind of farmer's shoe."
[2] Greek Anthology 6.95.5-6 (Antiphilus), a retiring plowman's dedication to Demeter; cf. Gow and Page vol. I (100-101); vol. II (126-127); and more extracts from this epigram at gamma 54, theta 498, mu 1430, and pi 1535. For Deo, see delta 483. Gow and Page note (vol. II, 127) that the context of the epigram make it much likelier that the headword here gestures not at an article of clothing, but at some agricultural instrument besides those already noted. They favorably review a suggestion from Müller (45) that the dedicated podew/n, the punctured end of an animal's hide, might have been a sieve used to shake corn apart from husks when wind was absent and the pitchfork method (see theta 498) would not be effective; cf. Blümner (10-11).
