Demeter despatched the hero Triptolemus (cf. rho 50 gloss) in a chariot to teach agriculture to the Greeks. As described in Sophocles' lost tragedy and shown on some vases (Gardner, p. 252), Triptolemus' chariot carried two serpents straddling or coiled about the axles; Lloyd-Jones, pp. 302-3.
