Cavades(1). In late 539 or early 540 CE, Anastasios of Daras (cf. PLRE IIIa s.v. Anastasius(6); on the northern Mesopotamian city of Daras, see delta 68) had been sent by Justinian (cf. iota 446) with a letter to Chosroes, asking that the Persian king continue to respect the Endless Peace (cf. alpha 3035); cf. Procopius 2.4.14 and Kaldellis (80). Chosroes did not answer, but--taking Anastasios hostage instead--he subsequently advanced upon and attacked (May 540) the Roman eastern frontier city of Soura (Sura, in southern Babylonia; cf. Barrington Atlas map 91 grid F5); cf. Procopius 2.5.8-10 and Kaldellis (82). By way of a ruse his soldiers breached the Soura circuit-wall gate, sacked the city, and Chosroes dispatched Anastasios back to Justinian with the cryptic message of the quotation; cf. Kaldellis (83).
