Headword: *)ofli/skousi
Adler number: omicron,1018
Translated headword: they incur a fine [at law]
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[o)fli/skousi] and [sc. also attested is] o)/flousi: [both meaning] they are liable for a debt.[1]
Also [sc. attested is] o)fliska/nw.[2]
Greek Original:
*)ofli/skousi kai\ *)/oflousi: xrewstou=si. kai\ *)ofliska/nw.
Notes:
The headwords are variants for the present indicative active, third person plural, of the verb proffered later in the entry, o)fliska/nw (I owe, am liable to pay, incur a fine); see generally LSJ s.v., and n. 2 below. The lemma's first verb form, evidently extracted from somewhere, is attested only in lexicography, and the second form occurs only in later texts; its first attestation is Dio Chrysostom, Orationes 31.143.3.
[In her critical apparatus Adler notes that ms G transmits *)ofliska/nousi.]
[1] The gloss is of the same grammatical form as the headword, but from the verb xrewste/w, I am liable for a debt; see LSJ s.v. and cf. generally chi 463, chi 464, and omicron 999. The headwords are identically glossed in the Synagoge, Photius' Lexicon (omicron717 Theodoridis), and Lexica Segueriana 323.5.
[2] Other forms of o)fliska/nw occur at omicron 1013, omicron 1015, omicron 1016, omicron 1019, omega 279, and pi 977. There are cognate substantives at omicron 1014 and omicron 1017. Cf. ps.-Herodian, Partitiones 104.8, ps.-Zonaras 1490, and Hesychius s.vv. o)fla/nein (gloss), present active infinitive, and o)fliska/nontes, present active participle, masculine nominative (and vocative) plural. Adler also cites the Lexicon de Spiritu, L.C. Valckenaer, ed., and the unedited lexicon of Codex Laurentianus 59.16.
