Greek Original:
*mesiteu/ein: a)name/son kei=sqai. ta\ de\ xrh/mata mesiteu/ein e)n *ku/prw| suneta/canto, par' oi(=s a)\n au)to\s eu)dokhqh=|.
Notes:
[1] See LSJ s.v. for the range of meanings (transitive and intransitive) of this verb; and cf. mu 661.
[2] Literally 'amongst whom' (as if the antecedent was 'with the Cypriots').
[3] Polybius fr. 183 Büttner-Wobst; context (and individuals) unidentifiable. Büttner-Wobst notes (538) that this fragment was attributed to Polybius by Iacobus Geel (Jacob Geel, 1789-1862). Büttner-Wobst also points out (ibid.) that the fragment's use of the present active infinitive mesiteu/ein (to be lying on deposit) of the verb mesiteu/w (I act as arbiter) suggests that an instance -- indeed its sole attestation -- of the future active infinitive mesiteu/sein at Polybius 29.8.7 (web address 1) offers plausible support for the fragment's attribution to Polybius. Finally, Büttner-Wobst accepts Portus's (Emilio Porto, 1550-1614/1615) emendation of the fragment, reading au)toi=s for the Suda's au)to/s: where it would be well-cared-for by themselves. Albeit with an interpretation that runs counter to this, Walbank accepts the fragment. He references the LSJ entry governing the infinitive (s.v. mesiteu/w, II (web address 2)), and notes (754) that as it pertains to this fragment, the use is intransitive; this implies that, once deposited, the money should lie "in neutral hands" (ibid.).
