[2] These words belong to the Stoic Apollodorus (see Diogenes Laertius 7. 118). The excellent person is the sage who, according to the Stoics, is free of passions or emotional states (a)paqh/s; see Diogenes Laertius 7.117) in being completely rational and having his impulses in accord with right reason. So, insofar as pain is an irrational contraction of the soul, the sage person cannot feel pain.
