Headword: *lo/gia
Adler number: lambda,640
Translated headword: sayings
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] things which (a) god says in prose; but chresmoi ["oracles"] [are] those which are spoken in verse, the speakers being inspired by (a) god.
Greek Original:
*lo/gia: ta\ para\ qeou= lego/mena kataloga/dhn: xrhsmoi\ de\ oi(/tines e)mme/trws le/gontai, qeoforoume/nwn tw=n lego/ntwn.
Note:
From the scholia to Thucydides 2.8.2: "many logia were in circulation, and many were the chants of the chresmologoi". But the distinction drawn here does not always hold good (see LSJ s.v. [web address 1], and Gomme ad loc.), and the one Thucydides is making in this passage is different: between ordinary gossip and the more formal pronouncements of the oracle-mongers.
