[1] The adjective koitai=os normally means 'bed-related', 'serving as a bed', 'abed', or 'encamped' vel sim. (see LSJ: web address 1). It is not otherwise attested in the sense indicated here.
[2] Ascribed to Polybius (fr. 177 Büttner-Wobst), who uses the adjective more frequently than any other author, but elsewhere only in the sense of 'abed' or 'encamped'. Büttner-Wobst notes (537) that Küster attributed this fragment to Polybius. Büttner-Wobst also records (ibid.) Schweighäuser's suggestion that -- unless it has been extracted from one of Polybius's lost books -- the context of the fragment could be Polybius 5.17.9 (web address 2). The fragment would thus be associated with Philip V of Macedon's 218 BCE landing at Corinth during the Social War (220-217) and his letter to Peloponnesian cities threatening a date by which he wished to have his entire force at Tegea (approximately 60 km. directly southwest; cf. tau 211) by bedtime; cf. Walbank (552-553).
