Adler number: kappa,1988
Translated headword: bands
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] decorations.
Greek Original:
*kombw/mata: ta\ kallwpi/smata.
Notes:
This neuter noun, here in the plural, is related to kombo/w "bind, fasten", kombi/on "buckle", and ko/mbos and e)gko/mbwma "band for gloves" (see under kappa 1987). LSJ extrapolates from the gloss that this is an "ornamental band".
In Hesychius, the singular of this noun is glossed as "garment; tumour" (kappa3433) and the plural, even more mystifyingly, as "those having [?] for a short time in rods by leaves" (kappa3437; Latte obelizes both 'time' and 'leaves').
