In an ancient custom those casting lots used to throw an olive-leaf, which they called Hermes, into an urn; and first they took this out, assigning this honour to the god; and the one after the god got his allocation. Euripides in Aiolos[1] mentions this practice.

Κλῆρος Ἑρμοῦ: συνηθείᾳ ἀρχαίᾳ ἔβαλλον οἱ κληροῦντες εἰς ὑδρίαν ἐλαίας φύλλον, ὃ προσηγόρευον Ἑρμῆν: καὶ πρῶτον ἐξῄρουν τοῦτο, τιμὴν τῷ θεῷ ταύτην ἀπονέμοντες: ἐλάγχανε δὲ ὁ μετὰ τὸν θεόν. Εὐριπίδης ἐν Αἰόλῳ μνημονεύει τοῦ ἔθους τούτου.
