Notes:
After the introductory clause, the source becomes
Polybius 5.39.6. Date: 220s BCE.
The Suda ignores Kleomenes III's career as king of
Sparta c.235-222 (for which see
Polybius 2.46-70, 5.35-9;
Plutarch,
Agis and Kleomenes) and focuses on the end of his life. After the Macedonians defeated the Spartans at
Sellasia, Kleomenes escaped to Alexandria, meeting his death in 219 after a failed plot against the Macedonian king of Egypt,
Ptolemy IV Philopator, named here.
