These two fish are often lumped together -- so e.g. Archestratus fr.45 Brandt; Oppian, Halieutica 1.111; Aristotle, History of Animals 567a, 591a, 602a; Aelian, History of Animals 13.19; Geoponica 20.41 -- though they are distinguished in Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 7.306D-E (7.77 Kaibel) and 8.356B (8.52 Kaibel). The kestreu/s is defined as a ke/falos in the scholia to Aristophanes, Wasps 790b, the scholia to Aristophanes, Clouds 339a, and the scholia to Oppian, Halieutica 1.156, 2.642; Hesychius kappa2401 about ke/faloi says, "some kinds of kestreu/s are so called."
