Headword: *)ekklhsi/an
Adler number: epsilon,471
Translated headword: assembly
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning a] bringing-together of a crowd.[1]
Aristophanes in Wealth [writes]: "is an assembly not happening because of wealth?"[2] For we assemble wishing either to preserve something of our own or to appropriate something belonging to others. But he is criticizing the three-obol payment because of the litigiousness of the Athenians.[3]
Greek Original:

Notes:
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica. The headword is in the accusative case, evidently quoted from somewhere (there are numerous possibilities).
[2] Aristophanes, Wealth [Plutus] 171, quoted here with the explicit dia\ plou=ton instead of the original dia\ tou=ton, "because of him".
[3] These two sentences of comment come from the scholia on this line of Aristophanes. From the 390s BCE the citizens of Athens were paid to attend meetings of the ekklesia (see ?Aristotle, Athenaion Politeia 41.3, with M.H. Hansen, The Athenian Democracy in the Age of Demosthenes (Oxford 1991) 150); however, this ancient comment seems to confuse the payment to ekklesiasts with jury pay, to which the charge of litigiousness would be more relevant.
