Headword: *)errw=sqai fra/sas
Adler number: epsilon,3073
Translated headword: having told [someone] farewell
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning he] having told [someone] to go hang, having condemned [someone].
Greek Original:
*)errw=sqai fra/sas: oi)mw/zein ei)pw/n, kategnwkw/s.
Same or similar glossing, variously, in other lexica. For the phrase fra/zein e)rrw=sqai, which (at least in classical Greek) has a more positive tone than the glosses here suggest (and cf. under chi 162), see e.g. Plato, Phaedo 61B (web address 1) and especially Demosthenes 18.152 and 19.248 (web address 2, web address 3). The two latter passages have the aorist participle, as here, and Demosthenic scholia suggest that 19.248 is the one that has generated the present entry; cf. Theodoridis on Photius s.v.
It seems likely that the lexicographical tradition (and maybe also the later Greek literary tradition) has confused forms of the verb r(w/nnumi "be strong, be healthy" with forms of the verb e)/rrw "go hang, go to hell."
