Adler number: epsilon,1772
Translated headword: to make way, to stand apart
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] to separate oneself.[1] "He commanded those who were complicit in the revolt to stand apart, and he shot them down."[2]
"[You] must keep holy silence and stand aside for our choruses" -- ['stand aside'] meaning give way -- "whoever is inexperienced in these speeches or is not pure in intention."[3] And elsewhere: "to give way to the initiated choruses." Aristophanes [says this].[4]
Concerning giving way, they do not readily pour even vinegary wine sufficiently into the pots.[5]
Same entry in ps.-Zonaras.
[1] The headword is present middle infinitive of ἐξίστημι ; presumably extracted from the quotation which immediately follows but also illustrated by the other two. For the verb, cf. epsilon 1770, epsilon 1771, epsilon 1773.
[2] Quotation unidentifiable. (Attributed to Aelian by Adler, on no basis stated or discernible.) For the verb cf. kappa 1046.
[3] Aristophanes, Frogs 354-5, with scholion.
[4] Aristophanes, Frogs 370.
[5] From a (mysterious) marginal note in manuscript M of the Suda; ὀξίνην is Adler's emendation for ὀξίξον .
